Abstract

Parasites are frequently encountered in the captive management of backyard game birds such as quail, guinea fowl, peafowl, junglefowl, and pheasants. Although parasites are generally a secodary problem in the health of these birds, they can be a significant mortality factor in times of overcrowding and poor husbandry. Because of the increasing popularity of backyard game birds for food, sport, or as pets, practitioners need to be knowledgeable in the diagnosis and treatment of the parasites of these birds and creative in designing appropriate preventive medicine programs. This article, therefore, reviews the clinical importance and control of significant endoparasites, including protozoans and metazoans and ectoparasites of this group of birds.
